DR SPACE (ØSC) and DR WEAVER (WICKED LADY/ DARK) have combined again to entrance the world with their heady mix of synths, electric guitar bass, drum machines and occasional electric piano and organ. “Adventures in the Deep Seas of Sound” does exactly what is suggested in the title: takes you on an imaginary under water journey in an hour of music in four parts that flows in one continuous piece.
The first piece sets the scene, mostly ambient, at times more demonstrative, the synths jumping between the speakers, flowing, at times floating guitar, pulsing bass and atmospheric synth textures. The ‘ocean’ comes to life in the second part, with TANGERINE DREAM-like waves of synthesised sound and blazing guitar. The third piece is the most impressionistic, ‘underwater’ echoes, pastoral and swishing synths in turn suggesting the tranquillity and activity of the deep, sharper synth sounds and guitar suggesting the possibility of predators perhaps; there is an unexpected and most efficacious foot tapping reggae/ dub section. The fourth and final part starts reflectively inducing a sensation of buoyancy, some mordent organ and guitar that reminded me somewhat of STEVE HILLAGE, leading towards a sudden ending.
I thoroughly recommended dipping your ears into the water of this quite extraordinary album and sink into its layers and depths from the waves to the ocean floor - I am sorry, I just can’t help myself with the nautical analogies!
