VARIOUS ARTISTS – PROGRESSIVE SOUNDS OF 1974 (1974/2023)

Hey - wasn’t ‘Round and Round’ that number by the Panama Jug Band on the Harvest Picnic sampler way back when? I remember rolling around the floor in a state of natural intoxication on hearing ‘Maybe My Mind (With Egg)’ by Tea & Sympathy from their album for the musically insane – anyway, I digress. Don’t worry by the way, there are only four CDs here: it’s a pity that many artists have a double go.

Still it’s all interesting prog fodder in its widest definition. Highlights for me (just to give you the flavour you know): CAMEL- Freefall and Lady Fantasy; JACK BRUCE – Keep it Down; GONG – Master Builder; PFM – The World Became the World; PROCOL HARUM – Drunk Again (Really!); NEUTRONS – Living in the World Today; PETER HAMMILL – Red Shift. It’s on Esoteric (Cherry Red). Oh, and by the way, there is nothing particularly insane about it – well maybe just a little!
