Rare Bird was increasingly sounding like an American band on a rather lightweight album, far from their more progressive roots. Nothing wrong with that and they do it rather well. Taken for what it is, the desultory reviews were a bit unfair. Rare Bird remain great song writers. ‘Diamonds’ is a good funky example; the music is easy on the ear. This song and ‘Last Tango in Beluah’ (over long perhaps?) made it into their live act. (Also ‘Lonely Street’ and ‘All That I Needed’ – these are on the bonus CD). The vocal harmonies are of the usual high standard (Listen to ’Peace of Mind’), and ‘Redman’ delivers a strong message. Steve Gould is in good voice. Dave Kaffinetti’s array of keyboards: clavinet, e-piano, organ, Korg synth provide texture and there is a solo here and there. Two bonus songs are included: ‘Don’t Be Afraid’ (Nice guitar break) a wee shot at disco perhaps?! And why not, they’ve earned it. ‘Passin’ Through’ (interesting synth) is the other bonus- with a wee bit of tango! The lyrics describe the trials and tribulations musicians face, perhaps in realisation that it was the end of the road for Rare Bird. The sound quality of the live concert is excellent and the extended version of ‘Third Time Around’ a treat for fans. All the live variations are well worth a listen; on ‘Hard Time; the band is right into the groove.
So, all five albums are very different and each succeeds in its own way. Rare Bird has left a remarkable legacy as one of the best ‘crossover’ bands (becoming less progressive and pulling it off in fine style), This boxset is highly recommended and well worth investing in.
