MATTHEW HALSALL – AN EVER CHANGING VIEW

Philip Jackson

Updated: Jul 25, 2023

Manchester trumpeter Matthew Halsall has gained quite a following and reputation since he founded his Godwana Records outlet fifteen years ago. The 100/ 500 limited colour vinyl run on Bandcamp has already sold out.

There are two tracks to sample there prior to the release of “An Ever Changing View” on 8th September: ‘Water Street’ and ‘Calder Shapes’: I enjoyed both of them, particularly the latter which had more involvement from his fellow musicians. Judging this, and what I have heard of Matthew’s music before, I would describe it as a kind of meditative jazz, easy on the ear, but make no mistake Matthew is a very accomplished musician who can mix it up with the best of them.

By the way, the album title and the music within were inspired by a house he was living in with breath-taking sea views. Shortly, Matthew and his band are embarking on an extensive tour of the UK, playing at small venues prior to landing at the Royal Albert Hall on 21st September.
