MASCOT MOTH – SPESIMEN B EP Bandcamp (2025)

After “Spesimen A” comes another EP from Welsh wizards Mascot Moth. It begins with an atmospheric chant ‘In the Light Tonight’ with sultry sax in the background (Rob Harrison) and tuned percussion and light drumming (Sioned Camlin) and some ‘outer limit’ bleeps at the end. Then there follow six more tracks that run as one continuous piece with ‘Algae Rhythm’ the most substantial lengthwise (at 6:20), getting into a groove with expressive wah-wah guitar (David Thomas), flute in the background and synth (Jack Hunter who is also the bass player and the vocalist). ‘I Had A Dream Last Tonight’ is a catchy little number about, once again, seeing a light, with a little ‘detuned’ guitar ‘wig out’. The final coda is a percussive instrumental featuring Sioned’s djembe.

“Spesimen B” is another idiosyncratic short album, an ‘organised kind of chaos’ at times, but with a strange and charming appeal, and sometimes transcendental. Most importantly, it sounds like the group are having fun, and so should the listener!
