I have previously enjoyed the music of this imaginative and idiosyncratic (in a nice way) band from Llanfyllin. Their latest release is actually a combination of three EPs apparently. ‘Ellis Ascendant’ is new to my ears; loved the fuzz guitar stereo effects, and sax deliberations. ‘I Didn’t Know’ I am familiar with from their previous release, but this is a shorter version. ‘Whatever It Was’ is a marvellous addition to the Mascot Moth canon, capturing the humorous spirit of Canterbury music and the rustic spirit of a Jethro Tull; there’s flute here as well as parping and floaty sax (Rob Harrison) and a charming dreamy interlude. ‘Your Different Mind’ is kind of funky with enchanting vocal harmonies from drummer Sioned Camlin, bassist Jack Hunter and guitarist David Thomas who also plays violin and viola on the EP. Closing instrumental ‘Deviant’s Dream’ illustrates the quirky, explorative vibe of Mascot Moth; lots of guitar glissando and echo with a sturdy bass and drum undertow, with whispering flute, going out with distant sax; it could have been longer. I look forward to the future sonic adventures of this quite remarkable band.
