HAWKWIND – IN SEARCH OF SPACE (1971/ 2024) (Esoteric/ Cherry Red)

I am looking at my United Artists original complete with log book – in this sort of condition these cost a pretty penny these days, so I suppose this 3 disc limited edition box set will be a good investment. This is a new stereo and 5.1 surround sound mix by Stephen W, Tayler from the original master tapes plus session outtakes (‘Hog Farm’ and ‘Kiss of the Velvet Whip’) and the single version of ‘Silver Machine’ and ‘Seven By Seven’. But there’s more, with a blu-ray disc and the 1972 promotional video for ‘Silver Machine’ as well as a reproduction of the log book and much more, in a lavishly illustrated 68 page book.

It has since become recognised as a classic all-time space rock album. Rightly so: I was, and am, a big Hawkwind fan who was lucky enough to see them play this music live in their heyday and, in my opinion, “In Search of Space” shades “Space Ritual” as their best album. There’s not much more I can really say except to refer you to Joe Banks’ excellent 2021 book “Hawkwind: Days of the Underground” for the lowdown, especially an 18 page chapter called “Charged with Cosmic Energy”.
