It is the 20th anniversary of Dream Aria, a Canadian prog band with classical/ operatic roots going back to when they were founded, with five albums during that period. The theme is an ambitious one, a full circle journey of one soul’s existence and experience pre-natal, life and afterlife, asking why we are here and our individual purposes in life, with four sections exploring the growth of our soul, and how we work out what our pathways are supposed to be.
I must say I preferred the vocal section to the long-spoken introduction, but once I started to listen, I could hear where we are going: in a musical sense; I would describe at as on the lighter, more melodic part of the prog spectrum, with fluid rhythms and a synthesiser break demarcating another section (“where do I find myself now?”), which continues with acoustic guitar and some organ and piano chords, then more synth. Next is an ‘orchestral’ passage, serving as a bridge (“so many pieces to the mystery of me”); the electric guitar led ‘options’ section – “war or peace”, “lies or truth.” ‘Awakening’ is a thought-provoking 15-minute long piece, and the precursor to a new album perhaps?
