Already reviewed as an editor’s choice in “Jazzwise” magazine and jazz album of the month in The Guardian newspaper, “Trio” is an intriguing pan-European recording of Lars Danielsson (bass- Sweden), Verneri Pohjola (trumpet- Finland) and John Parricelli (guitar - UK) in a Bordeaux wine chateau. In the Guardian review Pohjola’s trumpet on Danielsson’s piece ‘Catusella’ is described as “lustrous” and, muted, on the Latin ‘dance’, ‘Playing with the Groove’ compared to Miles Davis. His playing on Duke Ellington’s ‘Mood Indigo’ is also noted, a standard that has of course, been covered hundreds of times since its original appearance in 1930, by the likes of Monk, Mingus and even Nina Simone on her 1957 album “Little Girl Blue”. Other pieces attracting favourable comment are Danielsson’ reinvention of a piece by Claude Debussy (‘L’epoque’) and a surprise venture into the world of Ron Sexsmith in ‘Gold in them Hills’.
