APRIL RECORDS – A JAZZ LABEL FROM COPENHAGEN YOU MAY NOT HAVE HEARD OF

April Records has a number of new releases out: I have only been able to listen to a selection of tracks and one full album by RASMUS SØRENSEN, “Traits” (2022) with his trio completed by Jan Henriksson (double bass) and Francesco Ciniglio on drums, on which you can hear what an accomplished composer and gifted pianist he is. The whole album can be listened to on BANDCAMP, but his latest album “Balancing Act” is only there currently as a few tracks, but sounds very promising, with an entirely different band this time comprising bassist Alexander Claffy and drummer Kendrick Scott, a bandleader and composer in his own right, and founder of the World Culture Music label.

If jazz guitar is more your thing, then look no further than the new album by talented double bassist ARILD ANDERSEN “As Time Passes”, with Daniel Sommer on drums and Rob Luft on guitar.

In sharp contrast, and on the more experimental side of jazz, there is Polish trumpeter TOMASZ DABROWSKI whose music I can see myself getting really into over the coming months if what I have heard of his latest album as TOMASZ DABROWKI & THE INVISIBLE BEINGS called “Better” is anything to go by. This is only Tomasz’s second album with his septet, a Polish/ Scandinavian collaboration, which uses electronics, synthesisers and electric piano and also includes double bass, tenor and soprano saxophonists and two acoustic/ electric drummers. The music has many twists and turns and never loses sight of melody, which is so important. Release date is 29th March
