Kozfest was held in Axminster (famous for its carpets) in England on 29th July, 2023. Synthist/ synthetist Dr Space is joined by Vince Cory and Omar on guitars, with special guest Chris Purdon of Hawklords on synths who join Vince on more guitar and Mogens on more synths and the rhythm section of Jiri and Tim. As you might imagine they make a BIG sound! As we head out into space the title of opener ‘For Hawkwind Dancers’ is self-explanatory, all 38 minutes of it with panning synths, a steady groove developing and a lot of wah-wah guitar, infectious as hell. ‘Kozfest Jam’, at 30 minutes, gets ‘a little funky’, incorporating some African rhythms, reminding me fondly of Steve Winwood and company’s album “Aiye Keta”, although the siren-like modulated synth transits into a more exotic eastern sounding groove. After this Dr Space’s echoing voice exclaims, “The band is on fire tonight” and it’s hard to argue with that. The remaining 20 minutes didn’t quite have the same impact on me but we are after all ‘Coming Down to Earth from Planet Kozfest” and the band themselves may have been suffering a bit from space lag by this time.
